The Antitrust practice group, of the Litigation & Enforcement department, is seeking an experienced, mid-level associate, with a deep understanding of government regulatory procedures, to join the firm's team in the Washington, D.C. office.

Antitrust associates at Ropes & Gray advise clients on compliance with antitrust laws and government reviews of mergers and acquisitions. They represent clients in investigations by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and state antitrust authorities, and they conduct antitrust due diligence, assess risk, and ensure compliance with Second Requests.

Responsibilities:
Associates in this position will be expected to:
  • Conduct antitrust due diligence for mergers and acquisitions transactions.
  • Assess and analyze deal- and conduct-related antitrust risks and lead the antitrust review process including client interviews and opposing counsel discussions.
  • Prepare and review legal documents related to antitrust aspects of corporate transactions.
  • Handle Second Requests and responses to compulsory process in government antitrust investigations by the FTC, DOJ, and state authorities, and agency advocacy, including drafting white papers and presentations and preparing clients for investigational hearings and depositions.
  • Provide thorough legal guidance to clients and internal teams on antitrust law compliance and the government investigation process and stay current on changes to antitrust laws and regulations.
  • Represent clients in consent or other negotiations, hearings, and litigation.
  • Train and mentor junior associates.

Required Skills/Abilities:
Candidates must have:
  • 2 – 4 years of relevant experience advising corporate clients on antitrust laws and regulations, including pre-merger due diligence and risk assessments.
  • Strong knowledge of current antitrust laws and regulations.
  • Experience with Second Request compliance and defense of corporate clients in government antitrust investigations brought by the FTC, DOJ, and/or state authorities, including a thorough understanding of the investigation process.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills to routinely interact with the firm's clients and internal transactions teams on matters related to antitrust laws.
  • Strong analytical and negotiation skills.
  • Admission to practice in the District of Columbia.

Candidates with a combination of work experience at a law firm and at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or the Department of Justice-Antitrust Division (DOJ), are preferred. Attorneys with work experience at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or the Department of Justice-Antitrust Division (DOJ) are encouraged to apply.
